Alys Beach derives its name from Alys Robinson Stephens (1910–1996), beloved matriarch of the Stephens family who purchased the 158 acres at auction in the 1970s for .2 million after decades of family vacations in the area. Family patriarch Elton Stephens named the estate after Alys to provide a permanent retreat for extended family and employees. Development of the land began in 2004 following designs by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, the renowned New Urbanism planning firm that created two other Florida Gulf Coast planned communities. The architectural vision draws from Moorish and Mediterranean villages plus Bermudian styles, with courtyard designs inspired by homes in Antigua and Guatemala. All houses must maintain white exteriors, creating the distinctive unified aesthetic visible throughout the 158-acre property along Scenic Highway 30A in Walton County. Alys Beach became the world's first entire community designed under Fortified for Safer Living standards by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.

The 1,500 feet of pristine white sand beachfront along the Gulf of Mexico offers swimming, sunbathing, and unwinding in crystal-clear turquoise waters with soft, powdery sand providing serene environment less crowded than neighboring developments. Skimboarding and fishing entertain beachgoers along the shoreline, while outfitters along 30A rent gear for surfing and snorkeling. Paddleboarding and kayaking on nearby Western Lake's calm brackish waters prove perfect for beginners and families exploring the dune lake ecosystem. The 20-acre nature preserve provides miles of hiking trails through coastal habitats. The Caliza Pool creates an exotic oasis with swimming pools and outdoor dining areas within the community. State-of-the-art wellness center facilities support fitness activities complementing beach recreation. The distinctive white architecture creates photogenic backdrops throughout pedestrian-friendly streets designed for walking and cycling between beach access points and community amenities.

George's at Alys Beach serves regional coastal fare infused with global flavors using locally sourced organic produce and the freshest available seafood, with a beautiful viewing deck overlooking the Gulf and a downstairs lounge for family gatherings. Fonville Press under new ownership from The Citizen restaurant team offers all-day dining from 7 AM to 8 PM, featuring brisket biscuits, frozen acai bowls, roasted chicken flatbreads, and street corn salad in a design-centric coastal space. The CITIZEN at Alys Beach operates as a coastal tavern serving creative local fare. The community's finest culinary talents, distinctive shopping, exclusive beachfront access, and New Urbanism walkability create a seaside town unlike any other along Florida's Emerald Coast.
