Bonita Beach takes its name from the Spanish word 'bonita' meaning beautiful, reflecting the pristine character of Taylor County's Gulf Coast shoreline. The beach property was developed by a man named Batholomew, who operated a sawmill in the woods near the Strickland Bridge (also known as Batholomew Bridge or Jacks Bridge) and acquired the Bonita Beach land through a tax sale in the early 20th century. This small coastal community represents one of Taylor County's largely undiscovered beach destinations, located along Florida's longest undeveloped coastline in the Big Bend region. Perry, the county seat established in 1875 and named for Florida Governor Madison Starke Perry, sits approximately 45 miles inland from these remote Gulf shores.

Visitors to Bonita Beach experience swimming in the warm Gulf of Mexico waters and sunbathing on small sandy stretches separated by miles of natural grasslands and mudflats. The area offers exceptional fishing opportunities for grouper, redfish, and flounder both from shore and nearby boat launches providing access to inshore and offshore waters. Beachcombing reveals shells and marine life along the natural coastline, while sunset viewing showcases spectacular colors across the undeveloped horizon. Nearby Keaton Beach, just miles away, provides additional beach access and serves as Taylor County's primary Gulf Coast recreational destination. The preserve areas surrounding these beaches support canoeing, kayaking through coastal estuaries, and wildlife viewing including wading birds and dolphins.

Deal's Famous Oyster House in nearby Perry serves fresh Gulf oysters and seafood, consistently rated the top restaurant in Taylor County. Walter B's operates as a tiki bar-style restaurant featuring oysters and seafood with waterfront atmosphere. Keaton Beach Gas & Grill provides convenient dining directly in the beach area, serving casual coastal fare for beachgoers and anglers returning from the Gulf.
