Dewey Beach sits on the south side of Fidalgo Island in Anacortes in Skagit County approximately 7.5 miles south of downtown Anacortes and 2.5 miles northeast of Deception Pass State Park. The beach and community take their name from Admiral George Dewey of Spanish-American War fame, with the area renamed Dewey after 1898 to distinguish it from Fidalgo community on March's Point, having previously been called Deception and then Fidalgo City in 1889. The peaceful scenic neighborhood features 759 residents enjoying beautiful waterfront views along Fidalgo Island's southern shoreline where protected waters meet views toward the San Juan Islands archipelago and Olympic Mountains. The area's historical naming progression from Deception to Fidalgo City to Dewey reflects the evolving identity of Fidalgo Island communities during late 19th and early 20th century development, with Deception Dock once located at Fidalgo City in the present Dewey Beach area.

Swimming in the protected waters attracts residents and visitors during warm summer months when the beach provides access to calm conditions favorable for wading and recreational swimming. Beachcombing along the shoreline reveals smooth stones, driftwood deposits, shells, and beach glass accumulated over decades of tidal action. Wildlife watching draws enthusiasts year-round with over 200 species of birds found in the area creating exceptional birdwatching opportunities, including bald eagles, great blue herons, diverse shorebirds during migrations, seabirds such as cormorants and gulls, and waterfowl utilizing nearshore waters. Harbor seals occasionally appear in nearshore waters, and marine mammals travel through channels between Fidalgo Island and surrounding landmasses. Views capture fantastic panoramas of the San Juan Islands archipelago to the west with numerous islands visible across Rosario Strait, and the Olympic Mountains rising beyond creating dramatic backdrop particularly during sunset hours. Kayaking and paddleboarding launch from the beach for exploration of Fidalgo Island's southern shoreline with routes toward nearby Deception Pass State Park and channels between islands. The beach's proximity to Deception Pass State Park provides access to Washington's most visited state park featuring dramatic tidal currents, forested trails, and the iconic Deception Pass Bridge spanning between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands. Fishing from shore and nearby waters yields bottom fish and salmon during appropriate seasons.
