Geropotamos Beach takes its name from the Geropotamos River ('geros' meaning strong or holy in Greek) that flows into the sea at this location on the northern coast of Crete, in the Mylopotamos region between Rethymno and Heraklion. The beach's history is intertwined with the Venetian-era bridge spanning the river mouth, constructed in the 16th century and still standing as a testament to the area's strategic importance during Crete's centuries under Venetian rule. The river valley behind the beach was historically used for agriculture, with olive groves and citrus orchards that continue to characterize the landscape. Unlike Crete's more developed northern coast beaches, Geropotamos has retained much of its natural character, with the freshwater river meeting the saltwater sea creating a unique ecosystem that attracts migratory birds during spring and autumn.

The beach stretches approximately 600 meters, featuring a mix of fine pebbles and coarse sand, with the river mouth dividing it into two distinct sections. Snorkeling is popular near the rocky outcrops on either side of the river, where the mixing of fresh and saltwater creates nutrient-rich conditions supporting diverse marine life including octopus, moray eels, and schools of mullet. The river itself, typically knee-deep in summer, provides opportunities for wading and exploring upstream toward the Venetian bridge, where deeper pools invite swimming in the cool freshwater—a refreshing contrast to the warmer sea. Sea caves punctuate the eastern headland, accessible by swimming or via a rough coastal path, offering exploration opportunities for adventurous visitors. The beach has minimal facilities—no lifeguards or commercial beach clubs—maintaining its appeal for those seeking a more natural, uncommercialized beach experience. Strong winds occasionally affect this exposed northern coastline, creating favorable conditions for windsurfing but requiring caution for swimmers.

Avli Restaurant in nearby Rethymno Old Town, 12 kilometers west, serves Cretan classics including lamb with stamnagathi (wild greens) and gamopilafo (traditional wedding rice with goat meat). Pigadi Restaurant, also in Rethymno, offers dakos (barley rusk salad with tomatoes and mizithra cheese) and apaki (smoked pork) with honey and thyme. Veneto Restaurant, housed in a restored Venetian building near the Fortezza, specializes in boureki (zucchini and potato pie with mizithra) and fresh grilled fish with ladolemono (olive oil and lemon sauce). 7 Thalasses, located on Rethymno's waterfront, is known for its octopus stifado (braised with pearl onions), stuffed vine leaves with avgolemo sauce, and Cretan cheese platter featuring graviera, anthotiro, and xygalo.
