The Marine Garden at Harris Beach protects one of the Oregon coast's richest intertidal zones, where low tide reveals tide pools teeming with sea stars in vibrant purples and oranges, bright green anemones, hermit crabs, chitons, and numerous other marine creatures. A short trail from the campground entrance leads to the tide pool area where visitors can observe these protected ecosystems, though collecting or disturbing any organisms is prohibited in Marine Garden areas. Multiple hiking trails traverse the park including the 0.4-mile Rockway Beach Trail with coastal views, the 0.6-mile Harris Beach Trail to Harris Butte with 150 feet of elevation gain, and the 0.3-mile Sunset Point Trail connecting scenic overlooks. The South Beach Trail extends 1.2 miles into downtown Brookings for visitors wanting to explore the town on foot. Harris Beach does not provide lifeguard services, and ocean conditions can be extremely dangerous with cold water temperatures, strong currents, and unpredictable sneaker waves that can sweep people from rocks and beaches without warning. Never turn your back on the ocean and keep children under close supervision well away from the waterline. Tide pool exploration should only occur during low tide, and visitors must check tide tables to avoid being trapped by rising water. The Marine Garden protection means no living or non-living materials may be removed, and touching tide pool creatures should be minimized to prevent harm. Hiking trails can be slippery when wet, and proper footwear is essential. Camping reservations are strongly recommended during summer months and can be made up to six months in advance through Reserve America.
