Lanikai Beach, whose name means "heavenly sea" in Hawaiian, lives up to its name as the only beach in the United States consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Located on Oahu's windward coast in Kailua, this half-mile stretch of powdery white sand is renowned for its calm turquoise waters and stunning views of the offshore Mokulua Islands, locally known as "The Mokes." These two small islands serve as a dramatic backdrop, making Lanikai a prime photography spot frequented by professional photographers and models. The beach is particularly famous for its spectacular sunrises, where visitors can watch the sky transform into shades of pink, orange, and gold as the sun rises behind the Mokulua Islands.

Lanikai Beach offers excellent conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and body-surfing in its warm, calm waters. The beach is also popular for kayaking and paddleboarding, with many visitors launching from nearby Kailua Beach Park to paddle out to the Mokulua Islands—a round-trip journey that takes about an hour on calm mornings. Both islands are protected seabird sanctuaries, though the northern island has a small permissible landing beach and walking path. For land-based adventure, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike offers a moderate one-mile uphill trail leading to old military bunkers with panoramic coastal views. The beach is family-friendly with shallow, gentle waters ideal for children, though parents should note that Portuguese man-o-war can occasionally appear after windy days.

The best time to visit Lanikai Beach is during weekdays, especially before 8:00 AM, to avoid crowds and secure parking. Arriving early also offers the best opportunity to witness the famous sunrise. Parking is one of the biggest challenges at Lanikai, as there is no public parking lot—only legal street parking on residential roads. Parking restrictions are strictly enforced, and no parking is allowed on holiday weekends. As an alternative, visitors can park at Kailua Beach Park, which offers public facilities, and walk or bike to Lanikai. Beach access is through 11 narrow pedestrian walkways that pass between residential properties approximately every block. Visitors should be aware that Lanikai has no amenities: no restrooms, showers, lifeguards, or food vendors, making it essential to come prepared with supplies and to practice safe swimming awareness.
