Otūmoetai Beach occupies the site of historic Ōtūmoetai Pā, the most significantly populated settlement in the Western Bay of Plenty between 1600 and 1865, chosen for its exceptional food sources including the country's largest pipi shellfish beds. Early Māori populations of approximately 2,000 people thrived here until James Farrow's authenticated 1838 land purchase from chiefs Tupaea, Tangimoana, and Te Omanu marked the earliest European acquisition in the Bay of Plenty. Bishop Pompallier established a Catholic mission station within the pā's palisades in 1840, but the New Zealand Wars of 1864 resulted in government land confiscation and forced removal of ancestral inhabitants, transforming the sacred site into the modern Tauranga suburb of Ōtūmoetai with its tranquil beachfront.

Swimming in the calm, sheltered waters makes this beach particularly suitable for families with young children seeking safe conditions. Kayaking allows exploration of the harbor and coastline from the water, while dedicated bike paths and hiking trails provide land-based recreational options along the shore. Leisurely walks along the beach offer views across Tauranga Harbour toward Mount Maunganui, and the tranquil atmosphere supports picnicking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The beach's gentle waters and sandy bottom create ideal conditions for wading and teaching children to swim, with minimal wave action year-round.

Harbourside City in downtown Tauranga serves fresh seafood including snapper, green-lipped mussels, fish and chips, and New Zealand lamb with waterfront views. Mills Reef Winery Restaurant presents Bay of Plenty cuisine with seared scallops, duck confit, venison, and estate wines overlooking vineyards. Brew Co-Op offers craft beers, gourmet burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and sticky date pudding in a casual brewery setting. The Phoenix delivers contemporary dining with market fish, grass-fed beef, and pavlova in the city center. Macau Cafe & Bar features Asian fusion cuisine including laksa, dumplings, and Malaysian-inspired dishes with local ingredients.
