Sidi Bishr Beach takes its name from Sheikh Bishr al-Gawhari, an ascetic mystic who retired from worldly life to live in seclusion on the seashore in Alexandria. Established as a summering destination by the Egyptian middle class before the 1952 Revolution, the area transformed dramatically from a picturesque desert-edge location in 1928 into a cosmopolitan fashionable resort by the late 1930s following the extension of The Corniche. The beach became one of Alexandria's largest neighborhoods and attracted visitors from around the world, with three distinct beach sections serving locals and international tourists throughout the mid-20th century.

Swimming and sunbathing on the soft sand remain the primary activities, with clear Mediterranean waters providing refreshing relief during hot summer months. Visitors can rent small boats for sea outings, stroll along the promenade enjoying views of the Mediterranean, or relax at beachfront cafes like Al-Azizia Cafe and Retro Cafe positioned near different beach sections. The beach buzzes with activity during summer, offering a classic Egyptian seaside experience, though weekday mornings provide a more relaxed atmosphere compared to crowded summer weekends. Beach umbrellas and loungers are available for rent along the shore.

Fish Market Restaurant serves fresh grilled fish, calamari, shrimp tagine, and seafood rice with views of the Mediterranean corniche. Kadoura presents traditional Alexandrian seafood including fried red mullet, grilled sea bass, and tahini-dressed salads in a bustling local atmosphere. Farahat specializes in Egyptian mezze, stuffed grape leaves, falafel, and grilled kofta with freshly baked baladi bread. Sea Gull Restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine with pasta dishes, grilled octopus, and baklava on a terrace overlooking the sea. Athineos Patisserie delivers Greek-Egyptian pastries, millefeuille, cappuccino, and savory pies in an elegant historic setting dating to 1922.
