Sand Beach derives its descriptive name from its rare sandy shoreline along Maine's predominantly rocky coast, located five minutes from Stonington village on Deer Isle, which was settled by Abenaki peoples 6,100 years ago and connected to the mainland by bridge in 1939. This public cove beach serves the historic granite quarrying and lobstering community of Stonington, incorporated in 1897 and named for its quarries, offering Hancock County's East Penobscot Bay heritage with sweeping views toward Mark Island Light across the island-studded waters.

The beach offers swimming in calm protected waters along the sandy cove with large granite boulders, picnicking with opportunities to observe bald eagles overhead and ospreys riding along the water's edge. Short forested paths lead from the soft sand shoreline past large boulders to scenic viewpoints, while beachcombers explore rocks and shells when fog rolls in from Penobscot Bay. The beach's clear tranquil waters create optimal conditions for families, with free dirt parking for about a dozen cars off Sand Beach Road closing at dusk, complemented by Mark Island Light foghorn sounds audible across the water from this peaceful saltwater swimming destination.

Stonington dining includes Acadia House Provisions for Michelin-starred Chef Ryan McCaskey's cuisine as Maine's first Michelin star chef-owned restaurant, 27 Fathoms Waterfront Grill for fresh local Deer Isle Oyster Company oysters, and Aragosta for exceptional coastal tasting menus and prix fixe dining experiences, serving Deer Isle's working waterfront community and Maine's largest lobster port visitors.
