Siesta Key Beach takes its name from the Siesta Key barrier island, which was historically referred to as Clam Island, Little Sarasota Island, or Sarasota Key until the early 20th century. The renaming occurred around 1907 when Mr. and Mrs. Roberts opened Roberts' Inn (also called Siesta Inn), and Mr. Roberts partnered with Mayor Harry Higel to create the Siesta Land Company, which formed Siesta Village and renamed the island Siesta Key. A bridge opened in 1917 connecting the northern part of the key with Sarasota, followed by a second bridge at Stickney Point in 1927, making the beaches more accessible to visitors. The beach's sand is 99% pure quartz, estimated by Harvard University geologists to be millions of years old with origins in the Appalachian Mountains, having flowed down rivers until deposited on Siesta Key's shores. This unique quartz composition, with feldspar and mica removed over time, creates sand that remains cool even on the hottest days. In 1987, Siesta Key Beach was judged "the World's Finest and Whitest" beach, and in 2025 it ranked #1 in the United States and #4 in the world in Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards.

The beach features powdery white quartz-crystal sand ideal for sunbathing, with swimming in gentle Gulf waters and beach volleyball courts at the public pavilion. The free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley runs daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, connecting the Village to Turtle Beach every 30 minutes. Fishing charters, parasailing, tubing, and boat tours provide opportunities to explore the Gulf waters, while kayaking and paddleboarding allow navigation of quieter back-bay areas. Snorkeling, body boarding, and skimboarding are popular in the clear Gulf waters. Bike and e-bike rentals through Siesta Key Bike & Kayak offer exploration of the island's streets and paths. Wildlife spotting includes dolphins, manatees, and various seabirds, while the playground and pavilion facilities provide family-friendly amenities. The beach's unique sand composition has made it famous worldwide, attracting beachgoers seeking its distinctive soft texture and cooling properties.

Dining options on Siesta Key range from casual beachside eateries to upscale waterfront restaurants. Siesta Key Oyster Bar, known locally as SKOB, serves fresh seafood and cold drinks in a landmark beach setting. Captain Curt's, operating since 1979, is famous for its World's Best Clam Chowder along with stone crab claws and grouper. Ophelia's on the Bay, established in 1988, offers upscale waterfront dining with views of Little Sarasota Bay and dishes featuring fresh Gulf seafood. Spearfish at Siesta Key Marina specializes in hogfish, blue crabs, and Gulf shrimp straight from local waters. The Hub Baja Grill serves hand-squeezed margaritas and generous portions of tacos and fresh fish sandwiches. Anna's Deli, featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate," is renowned for its Surfer Sandwich with fresh ingredients piled high on artisan bread.
