Sunrise Beach sits in Sunrise Beach Park north of Gig Harbor on the west side of Colvos Passage in Pierce County. While specific documentation of the beach's naming etymology remains limited in readily available historical records, the name likely references sunrise views across Colvos Passage toward the east. Most of what is now Sunrise Beach Park was homesteaded and purchased by the Moller brothers, Rudolph and Henry, in the 1890s, with the property later passing to the Weathers family before becoming public parkland. In January 2011, Pierce County Parks transferred the entire site to Peninsula Metropolitan Park District, which continues operating and maintaining the park consistent with the Mollers and Weathers families' wishes for public enjoyment. The park provides developed waterfront access to Colvos Passage, the waterway separating the Kitsap Peninsula from Vashon Island and the mainland.

Swimming attracts visitors during summer months to Colvos Passage's protected saltwater, though cold Puget Sound temperatures limit extended swimming. Kayaking and canoeing launch from the beach for exploration of Colvos Passage with routes along the shoreline toward Gig Harbor, views across to Vashon Island, and opportunities to observe maritime activity. Beachcombing reveals shells, smooth stones, driftwood, and marine life along the shoreline. Scuba diving attracts divers to underwater environments off the beach. Wildlife watching includes harbor seals, bald eagles fishing and perching in shoreline trees, great blue herons stalking shallows, and seabirds including cormorants and gulls. Views capture Colvos Passage waters, Vashon Island rising across the passage, Mount Rainier visible to the southeast on clear days, and passing boats navigating the waterway. Picnicking areas with tables accommodate waterside gatherings, while the park's development provides amenities for extended visits.

Gig Harbor waterfront dining offers diverse downtown options. Brix 25 creates Pacific Northwest cuisine, award-winning Northwest wines, handcrafted specialty cocktails, and stunning waterfront views in downtown Gig Harbor. Netshed No. 9 serves breakfast and lunch Thursday through Monday in a historic building turned casual waterfront restaurant with outdoor seating along Gig Harbor's water. Tides Tavern operates as one of Gig Harbor's longest-serving restaurants for ages 21 and over, featuring great burgers including the Saint Louis Blue and local beers on tap. Anthony's at Gig Harbor provides waterfront views with full window seating overlooking the harbor and Mount Rainier. Table 47 serves as a restaurant and caterer creating diverse menu selections.
