Sunrise Beach sits in Sunrise Beach Park north of Gig Harbor on the west side of Colvos Passage in Pierce County, providing a second beach access point within the park. The beach shares its name and history with the adjacent Sunrise Beach location, both situated within parkland homesteaded by the Moller brothers, Rudolph and Henry, in the 1890s. The descriptive name likely references sunrise views visible across Colvos Passage toward the eastern horizon. Peninsula Metropolitan Park District assumed management from Pierce County Parks in January 2011, continuing to operate both beach areas consistent with original homesteader wishes for public access and enjoyment. The dual beach designations within the park provide multiple access points along Colvos Passage shoreline.

Kayaking and canoeing launch from this beach section for paddling exploration of Colvos Passage, the waterway separating the Kitsap Peninsula from Vashon Island and mainland Pierce County. Swimming opportunities exist during summer months in the protected saltwater passage, though typical Puget Sound temperatures remain cool year-round. Beachcombing along the shoreline reveals shells, smooth stones polished by wave action, driftwood, and marine organisms. Wildlife watching includes harbor seals swimming and hauling out nearshore, bald eagles fishing the passage and perching in mature trees, great blue herons stalking tidal areas, and diverse seabirds utilizing the marine environment. Scuba diving accesses underwater habitats off the beach. Views span across Colvos Passage to Vashon Island, with Mount Rainier visible to the southeast on clear days and maritime traffic navigating the waterway. The beach's position within the park creates opportunities for combined beach recreation and upland park amenities.
