Tiger Tail Beach takes its name from Tigertail Court, a nearby street named by James Vensel, Deltona Corporation's chief land planner who named all Marco Island streets. Tigertail represents an Indian name—the nickname of Thlocklo Tustenuggee, a famous Florida Seminole leader during the Second Seminole War. In February 1969, Marco Island Development Corporation (a Deltona and Collier Family joint venture) deeded approximately 32 acres of beachfront property to Collier County as part of Deltona's legal obligation to provide public beach access. The County Commission selected 'Tigertail Beach' over alternatives like Kendall Beach or Hernando Beach, though the property was originally rectangular with no tail shape. The current beach configuration formed when Hurricane Wilma struck the Paradise Coast in 2005, piling sand on the southern end to connect the offshore sandbar to the mainland, creating what locals call Sand Dollar Island. This 31-acre coastal park now offers mixed beach and lagoon environments unique among Marco Island's two public beaches.

Swimming at high tide provides deeper, calmer waters in the Gulf, while the tidal lagoon separated from the Gulf by a narrow sand strip creates calm, shallow conditions ideal for families and children to wade safely. Shelling at low tide reveals abundant Fighting Conchs, Lightning Whelks, and Calico Scallops across three miles of soft white sand beaches. Kayaking and paddleboarding in the calm lagoon waters allow exploration into the mangroves for wildlife observation, with rentals available at the park. Fishing, birdwatching, snorkeling, and camping round out outdoor activities. Tidal pool exploration and breathtaking sunset views from the barrier island attract nature enthusiasts. The park operates 8 AM to sunset year-round, with 0 daily parking fees for non-Collier County residents. Low tide suits shelling and sandbar walks, while high tide accommodates swimming and paddling in the pristine Gulf waters.

Tigertail Beach Cafe operates at the park near the playground, serving food and drinks with friendly staff directly beachside. Fin Bistro specializes in refined super-fresh seafood from local sources, with popular swordfish piccata, grouper, crab cakes, and calamari. Marco Prime Steaks & Seafood in the heart of Marco Island serves USDA Prime beef and high-quality seafood in upscale atmosphere. LeeBe Fish offers no-frills dining where local commercial-fishing boats supply most catches, featuring grilled or fried grouper, snapper, stone crab, shrimp baskets, and homemade coleslaw. Dolphin Tiki Bar & Grill provides waterfront island vibes with fresh seafood including grouper sandwiches, sushi rolls, Ahi tuna nachos, and creative appetizers like fried brie with raspberry melba sauce.
